Be Grateful

By November 10, 2022About, Culture

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we’ll all be taking time to think about the things we’re grateful for. If you’re having a hard time finding the motivation to practice gratitude this Thanksgiving, we’re here to help!

What is Gratitude?

The dictionary defines gratitude as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

The social, physical and psychological benefits of practicing gratitude are extremely significant. In a study of over one thousand people, Doctor Robert Emmons found that people who practice gratitude consistently report a host of benefits:

Physical

  • Stronger immune systems
  • Less bothered by aches and pains
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Exercise more and take better care of their health
  • Sleep longer and feel more refreshed upon waking

Psychological

  • Higher levels of positive emotions
  • More alert, alive, and awake
  • More joy and pleasure
  • More optimism and happiness

Social

  • More helpful, generous, and compassionate
  • More forgiving
  • More outgoing
  • Feel less lonely and isolated.

Cultivating Gratitude

One of the best ways to cultivate gratitude is by keeping a gratitude journal. If you take time to stop and write down the things you’re grateful for it will focus your attention on developing more grateful thinking. This causes us to see people and things in our life as new and exciting instead of taking them for granted.

Another way to cultivate gratitude is by counting your blessings on a daily basis. I recently started doing this on my drive to work each morning and it has had a profound impact on my life.
